Gregory Alfred Mathis

Gregory Alfred Mathis born 1/1/1953 in Sidney NY, passed peacefully at home in Margaretville N.Y. on November 26, 2025.

Greg was adopted along with his sister Carol Jean in their infancy by Alfred and Florence Mathis, he grew up on Hubble Hill along with another sister Andrea. Greg spent his childhood working on the family farm, as well as neighboring farms. Greg graduated from Margaretville Central School in 1972 and attended SUNY Delhi for Architecture.

               With his first wife Brenda, he had one daughter Melissa Fekishazy, with his second wife Betsy he had two daughters Sarah Djenene and Carrie Mathis. For the last 37 years of his life Greg was married to his soulmate Roxane Mathis (Butler) with whom he had a daughter Jodi Mathis, along with 2 stepsons Steven and Bruce Sines.

               With his father, Greg owned and operated Mathis Construction until his father’s passing. Greg then worked in local automotive shops running a car rental business, then he owned and operated Sensible Rentals car rental service until his retirement in 2024.

               Throughout his life Greg was an avid sports fan, both at the fan level and as an athlete, Greg was a multi-sport athlete and his passion continued long after his playing days when he became a coach, coaching USSF soccer, MCS little league program and Margaretville Legion Baseball. Greg loved being involved in his kids’ sports, attending all of their games and events.

               Greg was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Florence and a sister Andrea.

               Greg is survived by his wife Roxane Mathis, sister Carol Jean Finch (Charlie), children Melissa (Stephan) Fekishazy, Steven (Alex) Sines, Sarah (Sofiane) Djenane, Bruce Sines (Amanda), Carrie Mathis, and Jodi Mathis (Mike), as well as numerous grandchildren, a great grandchild, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law

               Greg has left his family with a legacy of love, honesty and respect. He will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

A celebration of life will be arranged by the family at a later date.
