James “Jim” Monroe Hammond
James “Jim” Monroe Hammond, 90, of Denver, New York, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026.
Jim was born on October 11, 1935, in Denver, New York, to Frank and Mae (née Hinkley) Hammond, where he was also raised and spent his life. He graduated from Roxbury Central School in 1954 and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1964. On August 2, 1958, he married Julia German. Following his service, Jim built a life and career in excavation, where he was known for his skills as an equipment operator and strong work ethic. He was also deeply respected as a mechanic, known for his ability to diagnose and fix just about anything.
Jim was a man who found joy in the simple, meaningful things in life. He loved working on vehicles and equipment, took great pride in keeping his lawn just right, and enjoyed camping in his RV. He was known for his subtle sense of humor, his attention to detail, and his steady, fair nature.
He is survived by his daughter, Penny (David) Purchell; his grandchildren, Morgan (Deneena) Purchell, Evan Purchell, Aaron (Markie) Purchell, Andrew Purchell; his great-grandchildren through Morgan and Aaron; his twin sister, Janet German; and many dear nieces and nephews. Jim’s legacy lives on through his family, who will remember him for his wisdom, humor, and unwavering presence.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Julia Hammond (née German); his brother, John Hammond; and his sisters, Inez Gregory, Helen Hogan, and Frances Rosa.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be announced.
Jim will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
