Jerome “Jerry” Raeder

Jerome “Jerry” Miller Raeder  (93 years) passed away on January 7th, 2025 at home surrounded by his family.   He was born in Margaretville, NY to Herbert and Mary (Miller) Raeder of Kelly Corners, NY. From an early age, Jerry demonstrated a passion for sports, with baseball holding a special place in his heart. He attended a one-room schoolhouse on Pink Street (in Kelly Corners) until the 3rd grade, then continued his education at Roxbury Central School, graduating in 1951.

Jerry's love for baseball led him to try out for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the winter of 1951/1952. Although he was invited to join their farm team in South Carolina, he chose to start a family instead, marrying Edna Wolcott in 1953.  Together, they joined his parents and worked the families’ Poultry farm, one of the largest for our region of the time.   Making daily egg deliveries to New York City, he worked the farm until 1965 when his parent’s retired.   Even though he gave up the farm life he never gave up his love of chickens and you could always find a flock under his care.

In 1965, Jerry moved to Prattsville and became the owner/operator of the Catskill Mt. Bowling Lanes. It was here he met Phyllis, whom he married on December 13, 1969. Bowling and a game of poker were some of his favorite hobbies.  Jerry worked as a mason with the Empire State Carpenters local until his retirement in 1990.

Jerry's dedication to sports never waned. He played baseball and softball well into his late 70s, contributing to the construction of the original Prattsville ballfield. As a respected player he managed the Roxbury Men’s Town Team for many years and served as an umpire for over a decade with the Schoharie Umpires Association.   Officiating sporting events for area Town Teams, Colleges and High School.   He was also the ultimate spectator, in his role as father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he made every effort to attend as many High School Sporting events as possible.

Beyond sports, Jerry was involved in his community. He served as a proud fireman with the Prattsville Volunteer Fire Department and later as a Fire Commissioner for 37 years, from 1974 to 2011. He also contributed to the Town of Prattsville Planning Board for over 30 years.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Phyllis Raeder, and his ex-wife, Edna Bivens. His legacy continues through his daughters, Janice Stickle (Blaine), Kim Mattson (Mark), Tracy Blum (Guy), Kelly Cerniglia, Bonita Chase (Lester), and step-children, Shelia Ottman and Jack Ostrander. He is also fondly remembered by his 15 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Barbara Raeder, and 2 nieces.

Preceded in death by his parents and brother Bruce Raeder, Jerry's memory lives on through the love and admiration of his family, friends, and community. His life was a testament to his love of sports and unwavering commitment to those around him.

A memorial visitation is scheduled for Saturday January 17, 2026 from 1pm-3pm at Miller Funeral Home, Roxbury, NY. Rev. Dykstra will offer a prayer service at 3pm.

Donations in Jerry's memory may be made to Prattsville Volunteer Fire Dept or Community Hospice.
