Watson Frederick “Watty” George
Margaretville, New York
Watson Frederick George, lovingly known to all as Watty, passed away peacefully at home in Arkville, New York, on September 16, 2025, surrounded by his family, after a brief but severe illness. He was born July 1, 1943, to Merwin “Jake” George and Mabel Van Kuren George, and grew up with a lifelong devotion to family, friends, and community.
Watty proudly served in the United States Army from October 1961 to October 1963, spending nearly his entire service in Southeast Asia, including Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam, where he exemplified honor and dedication to his country. He was also a long-time member and former chief of the Margaretville Fire Department, giving decades of devoted volunteer service and leadership to protect and care for his community.
A true people person, Watty found joy in his work and in every friendship he formed. He built a long and respected career as a butcher in local groceries, working in Margaretville, Roscoe, and later in Prattsville, New York, where customers and coworkers alike valued his craftsmanship and welcoming spirit.
He was also a dedicated member of American Legion Post 950, where he shared fellowship with fellow veterans and supported their community service.
Watty is survived by his loving wife, Arlene Wayman George, his beloved daughters Jodi George Carson and Carrie Fischer Bird, and his cherished grandchildren. He will be remembered for his steadfast service, generous heart, and the countless memories he created with those he loved.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 26, at 11:00 a.m. at the Margaretville Methodist Church, with military honors. A reception will follow at the Margaretville Fire Department.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Margaretville Fire Department or to American Legion Post 950 in Phoenicia, New York, in Watty’s memory.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who offered love, prayers, and support during this time.
