Richard Tucker

Richard Alan Tucker of Halcottsville, New York, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2023. He was 74 years old at the time of his passing. Mr. Tucker, a pillar of his community, was known and loved by many. He passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in a church while doing what he loved—preparing music to enrich the lives in his community.

Born in Owego, New York, on September 5, 1949, to Alan Tucker and Nancy Quinn, Richard attended Suny Potsdam, where he studied and received degrees in music education. His commitment to the community began during this time when he directed his campus’ church choir. It was here that he met his wife, Patricia, in 1968 when she joined the group. They were married on August 21, 1971.

Richard and Patricia moved to the area in 1972, and he began teaching music at Margaretville Central School that same year. Although he retired from teaching in 2004, he never ceased his work for the community he cherished so deeply. Mr. Tucker led church choirs, provided music for local school concerts and musicals, and played the piano for countless weddings and funerals throughout the years. He formed the region's Community Choir in 1976 and directed the group until his passing in 2023.

Many will remember Richard for his love of music and community, but his greatest passion was discovered later in life: being a grandfather and great-grandfather to Hailey, Michaela, Abigail, and Nyla, whom he loved with all his heart.

Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia; his siblings, Ann Marie and Alan Robert; his four sons, Carl, Michael, John, and Christopher; a growing host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and the community he dedicated his life to serving. He will live on in the hearts and minds of the many people he loved.

Calling hours will be held at the Hynes Funeral Home, 48 Walnut Street, Margaretville, NY 12455, on Wednesday, December 20, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 21, at the Sacred Heart Parish in Margaretville, NY, at 11:00 am. A reception will follow at the Margaretville Fire Department from 1:30 to 4:00 pm.
